Anokye, historical background
Anokye's immoveable sword is in Kumasi, he thrust it into the ground in 1697. The sword of unity is in the hospital grounds of Gee in the centre of Kumasi. It is there as a daily reminder to the newly formed Asante people of their confederacy.
My mother says that when they were children they would go to the site and rattle the sword. She says it's quite strange because there is some give when you hold it. It feels like it will slide out of the ground when you tug, but of course it doesn't.
Mohamed Ali had a go in the 60's. Mr Gee the Englishman who built the hospital tried to remove it with a bulldozer in the 50's. The sword disappeared for 6 weeks and returned again. Mr Gee apparently left Ghana in mysterious circumstances......
The sword site currently has museum built round it, so you can go and see it, but you cannot tug and pull at it. The bottle of shannaps in the photo is there because it is also a site visited by priests to perform rites on holydays.
